Issa

Kobayashi Issa (小林一茶) or just Issa (June 15, 1763 - January 5, 1828), by the way also the Arabic name for Jesus, is one of my favourite poets. He is one of the great four Japanese Haiku poets besides Bashô, Buson and Shiki. I like him because I sense his melancholy. His mother died when he was three, his grandmother, who raised him, when he was fourteen. He wandered through Japan. Got back, got a wife. All of his children died soon after birth and finally his wife died too. He wrote one of his most famous haiku at the time when his first daughter died:
The world of dew --
A world of dew it is indeed,
And yet, and yet . . .
One of my favourite poems of Issa is:
夜神楽や焚火の中へちる紅葉

yokagura ya takibi no naka e chiru momiji
In English:
Shinto dance at night--
red leaves fall
into the bonfires
It has even more power in German:
Ein Tempeltanz nachts:
Es stiebt ins Feuer hinein
Das rote Herbstlaub.

Japanese Language Project

For years I've been trying to learn Japanese. Yesterday I, finally, managed to learn the Hiragana and Katakana writing system. The Hiragana, which consists of 48 symbols, is used for grammatical morphemes in Japanese since it's an agglutinating language. The order of the single strokes are very important but the system is quite logical. You have 4 vocals and you add consonants. You have two diacritics which alters the phoneme from fortis to lenis ( ゛) or ( ゜) which converts the /h/ to a /p/:

Vocals Yôon
あ a い i う u え e お o (ya) (yu) (yo)
Consonants are added:
か ka き ki く ku け ke こ ko きゃ kya きゅ kyu きょ kyo
さ sa し shi す su せ se そ so しゃ sha しゅ shu しょ sho
た ta ち chi つ tsu て te と to ちゃ cha ちゅ chu ちょ cho
な na に ni ぬ nu ね ne の no にゃ nya にゅ nyu にょ nyo
は ha ひ hi ふ fu へ he ほ ho ひゃ hya ひゅ hyu ひょ hyo
ま ma み mi む mu め me も mo みゃ mya みゅ myu みょ myo
や ya
ゆ yu
よ yo
ら ra り ri る ru れ re ろ ro りゃ rya りゅ ryu りょ ryo
わ wa (ゐ wi)
(ゑ we) を o/wo

ん n
Modified with a diacritic they become:
が ga ぎ gi ぐ gu げ ge ご go ぎゃ gya ぎゅ gyu ぎょ gyo
ざ za じ ji ず zu ぜ ze ぞ zo じゃ ja じゅ ju じょ jo
だ da ぢ (ji) づ (zu) で de ど do ぢゃ (ja) ぢゅ (ju) ぢょ (jo)
ば ba び bi ぶ bu べ be ぼ bo びゃ bya びゅ byu びょ byo
ぱ pa ぴ pi ぷ pu ぺ pe ぽ po ぴゃ pya ぴゅ pyu ぴょ pyo

The same structure applies to Katakana, 48 symbols - 2 diacritics, which is used for foreign words. Katakana doesn't look as soft as Hiragana:

Vokale yōon
ア a イ i ウ u エ e オ o ャ ya ュ yu ョ yo

カ ka キ ki ク ku ケ ke コ ko キャ kya キュ kyu キョ kyo
サ sa シ shi ス su セ se ソ so シャ sha シュ shu ショ sho
タ ta チ chi ツ tsu テ te ト to チャ cha チュ chu チョ cho
ナ na ニ ni ヌ nu ネ ne ノ no ニャ nya ニュ nyu ニョ nyo
ハ ha ヒ hi フ fu ヘ he ホ ho ヒャ hya ヒュ hyu ヒョ hyo

From today on I will try to learn Kanji. Kanji are used as nouns and verb roots and there are a lot of them - 50'000 thousand and each has 2 to 12 different pronunciations. They normally have a On-Yomi (Chinese reading) and a Kun-Yomi (Japanese Reading). Fortunately, there are the so called 1,945 Jôyô Kanji which Japanese kids have to learn until graduation from secondary school and which are absolutely essential. Many newspapers and officials only use these Kanji. If others are used, they have to be written in Furigana. Furigana are small Kana (Hiragana and/or Katakana) written above the Kanji. And at last, they can be expressed in Latin letters, which is called Rômaji.
I will start from the first class and will work my way up to the middle school. According to my calculation it will take me 1,945 days or 5,3 years to learn all these Kanji. Since I don't have 5 years time to learn Japanese, I will learn two or more Kanji a day - which depends on the difficulty.

The Jôyô-Kanji list:
